Two dark and merry eyes blink up
Through the close bedroom air.
I whisper a Hush,
Hush, darlin’, Daddy’s sleepin’ – snoring,
Actually, so it’s probably alright;
Meanwhile, two hands are gleefully conducting
A tiny tempo they’d been storing up
All the live-long, boring, nap-heavy yesterday:
Swaddles are for suckers!
A small mouth puckers
Into an ooo, makes
a snuffle, coos,
Then says, deliberately,
“Unggg-ahh!”
To sleeping Daddy, her mobile monkey, and the ceiling,
And this translates roughly into,
“Mama! Life is new!
Seize the night!”
